One of the saddest reflections pressed upon the mind by the present terrible conflict is the vast extent to which the discoveries of modern science have added to the terrors of war and the miseries of mankind, says Sir E. Fry, K.C.8., in the course of an article in an English journal. If the Nightingales ' and the Listers have labored to diminish the sufferings of humanity, the inventors of new explosives, 'new forms of gun, new methods of warfare in the air and beneath the waters, have, it may be feared, more than counteracted the labors of the philanthropists. Of course, no legislation and no treaties can fetter the industries of the men of science, but it is to be devoutly hoped that the future may see them leaning towards the side of utility and mercy rather than toward the perfecting of the means of destruction. Once again we have before us an example of the necessity of subordinating the intellectual to the moral education of mankind. It is encouraging to observe that in spite of all the sorrow and sadness that fill every heart; in spite of the gloom which hangs over -the future, there is springing up in the hearts of man a profound hope that from out of the welter of bloodshed and misery may arise a better state of things; that the very horrors of this war may prove the deathblow to war in the future;
