BUTTER AND CHEESE.D
In the December number of the Journal of Agriculture, just, to hand, there is a very interesting map, showing the location of the butter and cheese factories.in the Dominion, together with; the output per annum. It is interesting to note that in the Dominion as many as 40-3 butter and cheese factories are established, being apportioned as follows :—Auckland 76, Taranaki. 80, Wellington 79, Hawke’s Bay 26, Nelson 10, Marlborough 11, Westland. 10, Canterbury 21, Otago and Southland 90. Among other items of interest | on the map are the following; At April 30, 1914, the total number of sheep in New Zealand was 24,595.405, and the total number of cattle 2,020,171. Of wool for the year ending September 30, 1913, New Zealand exported 195,353,5331 b, valued at £8,349,882. The export of frozen meat for the year ending March 31, 1914, was: Mutton (2,630,962 carcases) £1,905,502; lamb (3,808,006 carcases) £2,548,944; beef, £446,816; a total of £4,901,262. Hides, skins and tallow to the value of £l,915,281 were exported, the grand total of tli© frozen meat industry being £6,816,543. The dairy produce for the year ending March 31, 1914, was butter (395,169 cwt), valued at £2,110,019and cheese (742,391 cwt), valued at £2,195,273/
