BRIGHTER PROSPECTS.

) Auckland, December 16. The Minister for Defence made two interesting statements this evening. Tt was suggested that since the oceans had now practically been cleared of German raiders, it might be possible to remove some of the restrictions on small vessels entering and leaving the principal ports. The Minister agreed, and added that the authorities had under consideration reducing the garrisons at present being maintained in the forts. 1 Hon. Allen was asked whether the Samoan garrison might hot be also similarly reduced. He replied that this was different. It was absolutely necessary that a sufficient force should remain in Samoa, in order that proper control could be kept over the colored races resident in the islands.

WHEAT FOR THE DOMINION.

Wellington, December 15

The Prime Minister is advised that the Waitemata left Vancouver for New Zealand last Sunday, with 12,000 bushels of wheat, and is due in Wellington in the middle of January. The Niagara leaves Vancouver on December 23, with 10,000 bushels, due in Auckland on January 11th. The Hesperos leaves St. John, New Brunswick, this week pwith 290,000 bushels for a New Zealand port.

DEATH OF NEW ZEALANDER AT CAIRO.

SUCCUMBED IN HOSPITAL.

Wellington, December 17

Cable advice received at the Defence headquarters to-day records the death of Private John Archibald Campbell, of the Wellington Infantry Battalion, at Abbassia Hospital, Cairo, on the evening the 14th. Deiceasod, who was 27 years of age. was a horse driver, and came from- Najpier. The next of kin is Donald Campbell, Wellesley JRoad, Napier.
