STRATFORD SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
At the meeting of the Committee held last evening the following members were prsent:—Messrs P. Skogliiud (chairman), G. Smart, E. W. Hancock, F. Cramer, E. Jackson, T. Lawson, H. Sanderson and J .McMillan, i VISITING COMMITTEE.
The, Visiting Committee (Messrs Smart and Jackson) reported that they had inspected the school and grounds and had found everything going on splendidly. They recommended that the contractor for the removal of the headmaster's residence be urged to have same completed forthwith • that applications be called by advertisement for the removal of all the pine trees that are felled and are suitable for firewood, applicants to have the wood for the removal • that during the holidays the broken panes of glass in the exercise shed be renewed and stronger wire-netting protection installed ; and that bolts for the swing seats and padlock for the gates be procured. They reported that the tennis court is in first-class playing order.—Adopted. HEADMASTER'S REPORT. The schedules showing the results of the Proficiency Examination, held on the 18th inst., are sent herewith. Just the bare results are given on the schedules: the mark lists showing full results of each child's work will come to hand later on. Wo had 'l7 candidates, of these 35 got Proficiency, 9 Competency, and 3 (one of whom recently had a six weeks' soarletina rest) failed. The examination was conducted under new regulations, which aim at securing a uniform Dominion standard for the Proficiency Certificate, and was certainly the most difficult we have yet had. I don't mind this increased difficulty, however ; it will in. crease the value of the certificate to those who secure it. Tito only objection T have to the new method \s that by it the result of the child's whole year's work is based on only, one test. T shall be glad if all the members of the Committee will be at the Town HnII at 7.30 to-morrow evening, to assist in our annual concert. The operetta which is to be plared by the children is new to the district, ami
will, I think, be well received. I should like you to make some little allowance for sweets, etc., for beak. ing-up day. GENERAL. The Railway Department notified they would arrange for a special train for the annual picnic on February 4. It was reported that this year no prizes would be distributed at the break-up ceremony owing to the state of the finances which (were depleted by the cost of improvements to the grounds. It was suggested that certificates be given in lieu of prizes, and a committee was set up to confer with the headmaster on the matter. It was also resolved to "treat" the children on break-up day as suggested by the headmaster.
The following accounts were passed for payment:—Smart Bros, (sundries) CI lis, J. W. Boon (swings) £3 14s lOd, A If. Moon (stationery) £3 Os 9d, Beckett and Corlott (glass and signwriting) £1 10s, Stratford Electrical Supply Co. 0s sd, H. J. Hopkins (stationery) 17s Bd, Masters nnd Son £2 2s. Total £l3 2s Bd.
