Dunediuj December 11. Mr James Allen (Minister of Defence), in an interview, said the political situation now was entirely dependent upon what would happen with the Maori and soldiers' votes, and three doubtful results—Buchanan's, Statham's, and Dr.. Newman's. He did .not think either side could at present claim to have a reasonable working majority. The Reform Party, however, had thft satisfaction; that it was absolutely united, and nothing could destroy it. All >e could say was that he hoped when' the final count came it would: give the Government a majority sufficient to enable them to carry on the business of the country.
Mr Allen goes north to inspect the Maori contingents, and then on to Wellington.
