The Russian official messages neither confirm nor contradict the German capture of Lodz, but state that the defence of Lodz is no longer an urgent military necessity, and as the holding of it has been embarrassed, the Russians have withdrawn to revise their offensive. There was great .activity by the Allies and the enemy in France yesterday, the Allies making marked advance. Verolle was the scene of desperate fighting during the last two months, and was taken by the French after a brilliant assault.
