SURF BOAT CAPSIZES.
Three men drowned.

News of a boating fatality at To Awaite, East Coast (near. Cape Palli. ser) was received here by telephone this morning. A surf boat belonging to the steamer Kahu was returning to the vessel with a load of wool from Riddiford's station, when the engine broke down, and the anchor was dropped. The boat was swamped in a heavy sea, and three out of four men in, her were drowned, viz:. Ws, Leers (first mate, aged 30, married in Wellington three months ago) and O'Brien and Patterson (able seamen). The fourth mail was rescued by the Kaliu's lifeboat in charge of Wilson ('second mate). The bodies bad not been recovered,-, and the Ripple had been ordered from Akitio to proceed to the scene of the disaster.
