A fire on the steamer Willochra, which is being fitted at Port Chalmers as a troopship, was discovered yesterday. It appears that some shavings were piled up underneath a newlyconstructed bunk, and after being saturated with kerosene, were set on fire. Fortunately, the timber of the bunk and also the shavings were green, and that fact was probably responsible for the saving of the ship. Very little damage appears to have been done. The attempt to set fire to the vessel was probably made on Sunday night or early yesterday morning, but was not discovered till later. Little can lie ascertained in regard to the origin of the outbreak, and the occurrence is all the more inexplicable as part of the crew are sleeping on board. The vessel seems to have been boarded from a hulk which is moored alongside.
