THOUSANDS MASSACRED. United Press Association. . Paris, November 22.
Professor Reiss, of Lausanna University, has concluded an inquiry into the Austrian atrocities in Servia. He states that Austrians massacred 4000 unarmed peasants in the Shabatz district, including women. The majority had been taken as hostages, but as it was impossible to send them to Austria immediately, they were hanged or shot. The Austrians forced 108 hostages at Lechnitza .to dig their own graves, and though many were only wounded, the firing party immediately filled in the graves, burying many alive.* Professor Reiss visited other villages, where 1148 civilians were killed, and i'2Bo disappeared. 4 The Viennese Press justifies the massacres, stating that the Servian population is always revolting.
