JOTTINGS.
Field Marshal Sir Evelyn Wood, V.C., in a letter read at a recruiting meeting at Foisted, Essex, advised all who were able to be prepared to take military service. Sir Evelyn added: “I have three soldier sous now serving. If lam called upon to sweep the crossing at Whitehall, 1 shall S; D • ‘Right you are; give me the broom!’ ” Battle-names are curious things; There are-very many fights which have variant names in different countries. Waterloo is Mont St. Jean in France, La Belle Alliance in Germany. Koniggrata is also Sadowa. The Frenchman has not heard of Blenheim, hut of Hochstadfc. Then there are strange misnomers. Hastings remains obstinately Hastings despite all efforts to call it more accurately Senlac, and Charles Martel’s victory over Abdu Rahman is alternatively Tours and Poitiers, though fought at neither place. But most curious of all are the descriptive names like the Battle of the Standard, the Battle of the Herrings, the Battle of Spurs, and many others.
