TARANAKI RUGBY UNION.
MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETING. A meeting of the management committee of the Taranaki "Rugby Union was held at Stratford last night, when there were present: Messrs .Tas. McLeod (chairman), F. Moore, Jas. Garcia, R. Masters (treasurer), and P. Skoglund (secretary). The secretary of the Wanganui Education Board forwarded a cheque for £5, in payment of the Board’s annual contribution to the Alt'. Bayly Scholarship fund. The Board also notified that in consequence of the small amount of interest taken in the scholarship in their district it had been decided to withdraw the annual grant this year. Only one candidate had entered for the next examination and there were, the secretary thought, not more than two last year. Members were of opinion that it was a pity the scholarship should be allowed to drop, and the opinion was ‘expressed that possibly the age limit or some other of the conditions might bo modified so as t° popularise the scholarship. It was pointed out that the age limit 15 was rather too high for primary school boys, and too low for secondary school hoys, so that the scope was very limited. It was resolved to write to the secretary of the Wanganui Education Board, regretting that so little interest was taken in the scholarship in South Taranaki, and suggesting that they should ask their chief inspector to take the matter into consideration with a view to suggesting such amendments in the conditions as would make the scholarship more popular. It was resolved to hold the Bayly Memorial Sports at the New Plymouth High School grounds on Saturday, December sth. It had last year been decided to hold the sports at Patea, but of the twelve candidates, ten hailed from New Plymouth, one from Stratford, and one from Hawera. Mr W. D. Webster, secretary of the Tukapa Football Club, wrote pointing out the unfairness of the Union only paying expenses in plaff-off matches so far as the gate would allow. In senior matches, he wrote, the Union frequently makes a creditable profit, whereas in matches of lesser grade the clubs had to faec the expense. He forwarded an account for Tukapa Club expenses. Members recognised the fairness of tho contention, hut as the rules did not allow of the payment no action was taken. It was, however, a matter for notice of motion by delegates at the annual meeting, when the whole position of expenses will have to bo considered. The secretary stated that all data had been destroyed by fire, but so far as he could make out, the Union, despite the Ranfurly Shield matches, would barely come out squarely,. The season had, however, started with a debit balance: of about '£7o; ■' ' r ‘ * Accounts amounting to £2Ol 15s 7d, wore passed for payment.
