"At Czernowitz for two whole days the city fathers and priests travelled the countryside, beginning with the peasants, and came to the town hall weeping and deposited their trinkets. The Jews ■sacrificed the ritnai candelabra, and the Archbishop contributed 50,000 crowns' 'worth of silver and furniture. Finally, the burgomaster broke into the shops of the goldsmiths who had fled when the money was being collected. General Arintinoff came to the town hall and said to the city fathers: "You look fagged!" After inspecting the treasure he said: "Tai;e it back, 1 only wanted you to have the experience of the heart burnings of Kamenav and Rodolski."
