A Valuation Commission consisting of Messrs T. F. Martin (Wellington, chairman)-, Ewen Campbell (Wanganui), and Jas. Rutherford (Auckland), will inquire into the grievances of people who consider they have been unfairly treated in the valuation of their property -and make recommendations, particularly in regard to a (letter form of appeal than is provided by the Assessment Court.—P.A.

At the inquest on the bodies t f Anthony and Richards, who dud from razor wounds at Clive yesterday (states the Press Association) the evidence went to show that both were* addicted to drink. Richards boarded with Mrs Anthony. Tim latter was to have left for Wanganui yesterday morning, but wired to her mother that she wajj too hi. The inquest was adjourned till Monday to permit of the mother giv'.ig evidence.

An anonymous person who disagrees with the action of certain members of tire Westport Borough Council on the sewage works dispute lias offered to donate £lO to the Belgian Fund if the members will each woi’k one day shift of eight hours and also work one night shift of eight hours in sewerage trench at Parkington street as ordinary working men (says the Grey River Argus). Mr A. Leaver (Mayor) and Mr J. W. Harker (councillor) intimated that they have accepted the challenge, will work the shifts mentioned, and donate the pay thev receive to the Belgian Fund.

The prisoner .Hackett, who jumped from the train at Te Kuiti on October 30th, while being conveyed from New Plymouth to Hamilton, where he was to be charged with a series of false pretences, was captured by the Rotorua police at Atiamuri, some miles from Rotorua, yesterday. The Press Association states that the police did excellent work, tracing the man from Otorohanga right through the back country to Taupe, with which country Hackett is thoroughly familiar. Yesterday he boarded the Taupo-Totara Timber Co’s, private. train at Mokai, on the Putatnru line, but instead of going right through, he. jumped off at a bridge over the Waikato river, and made towards Atiamuri. Here the Motorna police, who were on the lookout, picked tip a trail, and. arrested him. Hackett showed no signs iof privations. 1 From reports received from the police, it is, probable the. list oi charges will be considerably increased as the resuit of his dash for freedom.
