—The Wellington Patriotic Committee has decided to inaugurate a Dominionwide shilling fund for the benefit of the distressed people of Belgium. It is hoped to raise £25,000 by this measure.

It is persistently rumoured that two of the officers of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (main body) are to be recalled to the dominion, under arrest, ,to answer .charges arising out of the administration of certain regimental funds.

A "patchwork quilt chain" has been formed in Waimate—the first of its kind in the South Island—by which it is expected (says the Advertiser) that quite 200 quilts of all sorts and sizes will be sent to be distributed to the poor of Great Britain and Belgium.

The steamer Navua, which arrived at Auckland last night from Tonga, Samoa, and Fiji} brought thirty-five members of the advance guard from Samoa, the majority of whom had been invalided. The garrison was reported all well. Among the returned troops was Captain W. H. D. Bell, of Wellington. *, |

The secretary of the Clifton County Council, Mr H. E. Vaughan, has discovered amongst county papers an old payment voucher dated May 1, 1894, and signed by E. H. Davies, engineer. It is interesting to note that the engineer is identical with BrigadierGeneral Davies, who is at present commanding a British corps in the conflict in France.

In Dunedin af Tuesday's auction of sheepskins Messrs Wright,. Stephenson, and Co. offered for sale the skin from the sheep which was sold on the previous Wednesday at Burnside for £O6 10s. The skin was sold and resold until it ultimately realised as much as £7 10s 6d, which must constitute a record for a single skin. The Belgium Relief Fund benefits; to tfye extent of £64 0s 6d from the sale of the sheep and the skin.
