REMARKABLE GALLANTRY UNDER MURDEROUS FIRE. HAND TO HAND IN DEATH STRUGGLE WITH BAYONETS (Received 9.30 a.m.) •, Paris, November 4. \ Details of the fight of the London Scottish show that a famous British infantry unit was compelled, owing 10 the terrific onslaught of the Bavarians, to evacuate Messines. The London Scottish were ordered to recover the ground. Our artillery blazed at Messines all day and dislodged a portion of the gunners. In the evening the Scottish crept .cautiously forward. A searchlight found them, and they dashed forward, bayoneting the Bavarians up to, through, and beyond the town of Messines, which was won, and Maxims were placed in position. The Scottish therlNre-formed and bivouacked for the night. At daybreak they advanced with the support of a cavalry brigade operating in the vicinity. Misled by spies, they found tlmms.flves in open beet-fields under a murderous German arti fiery fire, ir.*m falling on all sides. They pushed on under relenrless shrapnel, the majority escaping the shell zone. Suddenly they became a target for trench upon trench of German infantry, skilfully hidden. The Scottish crept through the beet fields with bayonets fixed. The Germans in overwhelming numbers engaged them from the trenches, and a death struggle ensued, _Ths Scottish, in a hand-to-hand fight, overpowered the Bavarians, who ran. The Scottish hud suffered too sever-dy to pursue them.
