V.R.C. MEETING.
CARLITA WINS THE DERBY.
United Press Association
Melbourne, October '6l
The anticipation that the Cup meet-" ing would be as big as ever was borne out on the opening day. Despite the light and continuous rain, all the stands were packed. The Federal and State Government parties were accompanied by the New South Wales and South Australian gubernatorials. Until to-day the tracks were the hardest ever known, and it was feared that horses would break down as well as establish records. The application of water proved too much, in view of the rain, and the going was heavy.
The Derby was anticipated to prove a match betweon Woorak and Mountain Knight, but both failed dismally. Another interesting phase was the 1 ace between the two Oaks fillies. It was considered that, in view of the heavy going, Traquette hung too closely to Woorak, and she may, therefore, turn the tables on Carlita next Thursday. The surprise of the race was the running of Giru and Indiscretion. The first must give a good account of himself in the Cup. The latter ran six lengths behind the field for threequarters of a mile, but entered the straight on terms with Woorak.
The Melbourne Stakes was a splendid race. The winner put up a fine performance, which strengthens his Cup claims.
; Red Signal's win in the Maribyruong Plato was due to McLachlan's clever riding. He finished the last two furlongs under the whip. The last race was ridden in a heavy and driving rain.
