GERMAN SUBMARINE'S WORK IN THE STRAITS OF DOVER, High Commissioner reports from London, Ist November, 1.60 a.m. ?:-- The Admiralty reports that the old cruiser, Hermes (5600 tons) was torpedoed by a German submarine in the Straits of Dover and sunk. Newly all the officers and crew were saved. The Venerable (15,000 tons), aided by gunboats and flotillas, was in action all day in support of the Belgian left. This is the fourteenth day of the naral bombardment. ALLIES' STEADY ADVANCE. Paris, October 31; Official.—The Germans resumed a general offensive between Nieuport and Arras. We have captured Ramseappelle, and progressed towards Passcherdach. We lost a few points, at Dappni and south of Ypres. All the German attacks between La Bassea and Arras were repulsed,. with heavy losses.
