TARANAKI EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING.

The following further business was transacted at Wednesday's meeting of the Education Board:—

CHAIRMAN'S REPORT.

The Chairman v reported:—Physical Training Camp: As directed hy resolution of the Board, he arranged for the Stratford District High School to be kept partially open during the time the classes for the physical instruction of the teachers were being held in New Plymouth. The fortnight's training passed off very successfully, and while it was not to be expected that all those who took part would be efficient instructors, all must have benefited and many would be able to, instruct by better methods than had hitherto been the case. The Chairman stated that he considered it would be advisable not to fill up some of the vacancies until after the end of the year, so as to get the benefit of any teachers that had qualified by that time. The report was adopted. OVERSEER'S REPORT. Stanley.— The painting and other work has been carried out. Tuna.—The painting of the outside of the school and residence kas been completed. Plans.—The following plans have been sent to the Department:—Douglas, additions to school and residence. The report was received, and the following matters referred to the overseer :—Huiroa, work at out offices ; Stanley, 9> gate to bo supplied. SCHOOL COMMITTEES. The secretary of the Stratford School Committee wrote asking that their protest against holding the teacher's camp just prior to the examination be forwarded to the Department. lii moving that the letter be laid on the table, the chairman said that no greater censure could be passed on the school staff than that letter. It was not necessary to send the letter to the Department. The camps could not be held throughout the Dominion at.the same time, so that some schools would find the date unsuitable, but where the teaching was good there was no reason to fear that the children would not come out well at the examination, despite a fortnight's holiday. 4 The motion was carried. GENERAL. The only tender received for the schoolmaster's house at Stratford being considered too low, Mr Masters was authorised to dispose of the house on the best terms possible. An application from the Stratford Committee for a grant of £4 towards cleaning out the septic tank at the school was referred to Mr Masters to report upon. The Taranaki County Council notified having mado a grant of £2O to the Technical College. The Board passed a vote of thanks for the gift. Accounts amounting to £2901 6s wei'e -passed for payment. j
