LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The annual examination of the Stratford school is proceeding to-day. Six hundred and ninety children are present. In connection with the ball at the Town Hall this evening those attend- 2 ing should note that masks will he procurable at the Town Hall and not at the fire station, as previously announced. Proceedings will commence with a grand parade. At Ashburton about half an inch of rain fell yesterday (states the Press Association) and will benefit the countryside immensely, it was followed by a few showers of hail and sleet. The night was bitterly cold, ten degrees of frost being registered in Ashburton. The effect on the fruit gardens will be bad.
