NATURALISED SUBJECT LEADS TREASON PLOT.

Ottawa, October 21

The military authorities at Montreal have discovered a. widespread plot, backed by ample funds from the Austrian Government, to smuggle from the country the reservists, of whom there are-100,000 from Canada. Israel Stanhofer, a naturalised Britisher, has been arrested. He supplied the reservists with tickets and money, and instructed them to pass the border as Roumanians. This is the nrst treason case sinco the Riel trial in 1885.

■ Twenty thousand Austrians in Montreal are destitute, and soup kitchens are being opened. THE SECOND. CONTINGENT. Ottawa, October 20. There is a great rush to join the second contingent. Eight thousand have already been enrolled.
