LOCAL AND GENERAL.
A resolution of sympathy with Mr Robinson, West Riding foreman, in the recent loss of his wife, was passed by the Stratford County Council this morning.
At the conclusion of Mr W. T. Jennings’ political address at Otangiwai last night, a vote of condolence to the widow and family of the late Mr Walter Symes, formerly M.P, for this district, was carried.
The Avickland telegram regarding the treatment of prisoners of war was shown to Mr Massey, who replied that the Government’s instructions were to treat prisoners like the Governor and Chief Justice of Samoa according to their rank. No significance was attached to the treatment accorded to the prisoners at Motuihi.—P.A.
At The Couilty Council meeting this morning Cr. Rogers asked that the North (west) Riding foreman be in. structed to keep open the watertables on the unmetalled portion of Pembroke Road, next to the radius line; but the Council did not agree to the suggestion. ' ■
The question as to whether or noi 1 here should be a Fire Board for the Stratford district was fully discussed at the Fire Brigade’s annual dinner last night, and while the advantages of having a Fire Board were admitted, the general opinion of local firemen seemed to be that so long as the present good relations continue between the Brigade and the Borough Council a change was not desirable.
Last year the Fire Brigade finished up with a credit balance of 3s Bd. The annual dinner was held as usual, but the fare provided was of a severely plain nature. This year they had a credit ( balance of £7O odd, and tßis was reflected in the annual dinner last night, the refection provided being excellent and well up to Mrs Brooking’s high standard.
The Engineer suggested at the meeting of the County Council this morning that the work of re-building bridges at Toko be done, by day labor, but members pointed out .that in April last the Council bad adopted a recommendation by the Engineer thafc all work should be done by contract. Members were unanimous that circumstances had since changed entirely, and it was. decided to rescind the provision mentioned.
Some discussion -took place at the County Council meeting this morning regarding the Council’s powers and obligations in respect of dead animals being allowed to lie on private property near road boundaries, creating a nuisance. The chairman said he knew of two or three such animals which were lying quite close to roads, causing a {considerable stench. Members exposed doubt whether such cases came within the jurisdiction of the County or of the Stock Department, and it was finally decided to mention the matter to the police.
The Te Wera Tennis Club hold their annual dance in the town hail, TeWera on Friday night. The dance proved one of the most successfxil held this season. There wore about thirty-five couples present, and all thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The Hall was tastefully d-vspvAtei with evergreens, and was set oil with flags and Chinese lanterns. Muc,i credit xs duo to the ladies, who worked ye' y hard to ensure the ‘-’access of the evening. Mr A. Flynn, who was M.C., had a strenuous time. Good music was supplied by Mrs Eiancci and Mr Kelly, ahd extras were played by Mrs Brewer, Miss i’Leury, and Miss Tiplady. Songs were sung by Mrs Brewer, Miss Tiplady, and Mr Hill. -The dance was kept me'nly going till the early hours of the morning.
The Hawke’s Bay A. and P. Society’s fifty-first spring show commenced this morning under superb weather conditions (states the Press Association). The entries are not quite up to the record number of entries at the jubilee show last year, being affected somewhat by the altered conditions brought about by the war. Cattle are particularly well represented, but sheep are not so numerous as usual. There is an average entry of ' horses. Shorthorns are said to bo very splendid in quality, and it is said a better lot has never before been exhibited at any show in New Zealand. Polled Angus are also stronger than usual, and Hereford’s are a good section. The show is an undoubted success. The judging shows that wellknown breeders are again to the front, the champions up to the present being divided up as follows:—Cattle, Ernest Short 3, Paul Hunter 1, Douglas McLean 1. C. E. Webb 2, W. J. Lovelock 1; reserve champions, Hutchinson Bros 1, Douglas McLean 1, C. fl. Thompson 1, W I. Lovelock 1.
