COMMONWEALTH CABLES.

SAVED FROM THE DROUGHT. [By Electric Telegraph—Copyright] United Press Association. (Received 10.40 a.m.) Sydney, October 19. The eastern unci northern parts of Australia will greatly benefit by the mcnsoonal rains which began on Friday and are still falling. All fears of a drought west of the mountains is dispelled. This has had a wonderful effect' in stimulating the financial position. Stock are saved, and a reasonable harvest is assured.

The Telegraph, in a leader, says: The rain storm means much more to the State than can be expressed in bushels of wheat, tons of hay and head of stock saved from drought. 11 tends to relieve the financial tension and act. as the best possible tonic to public confidence in counteracting the 'adverse influence of the war. It is too late to give, the State a good aggregate grain harvest, but the possibilities of recovery over a third oi a half of the area sown.is sufficient to give a considerable exportable sur plus over internal requirements fo food and seed. A record dairy pro duction is certain.

The Herald, which is still pessimistic regarding the wheat and pastoral outlook, says: On the whole the vain is of little value to the wheat crops. It is too late to save the situation even where the falls are greatest. Very little has fallen in the Riverina, and it is doubtful if the pastoral prospects could be more serious. THE TRAMWAYS DISPUTE. Adelaide, October 19. A meeting of the tramway employees strongly protested against the High Court decision, and resolved to take necessary steps, even to the extent of drastic measures, to obtain recognition of their claim for better wages and conditions. Tbe Federal Council meet in Melbourne on Friday to consider the future action of the Association.
