The Dunedin Drivers' Union wanted to have a little social gathering on Friday night, and asked for permission to hold it in the room suitable for that purpose at the Trades Hall. The Board of Trust of the hall, however, declined to allow the social to be held unless all alcoholic liquors were excluded, and the "wine list" confined to tea and soft drinks. The union rejected this proposal (states-the Times),, p.nd hold the jovial function in 'the hall in Hanover street. Mr W. E. J. Maguire, speaking at the social, referred feelingly to the action of the Trades Hall Board of Trust in trying to impose the order of the blue ribbon on the drivers, which he condemned roundly, saying that, if they could not hold such gatherings at the Trades Hall, tho sooner they got away from the institution the better.
