The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 20, 1914. THE SPY MENACE.

Lord Beresford's warning against spies and bis recommendation that the Imperial Government should deal more stringently with alien suspects should carry grave weight with the authorities. Even the German who is naturalised as a British citizen is in too many cases a source of danger. He may gain his living in British territory and owe all his prosperity to the British people among, whom he dwells, but his heart, naturally enough, is with, his Fatherland; and the records of the war show that he will stick at nothing to do the Fatherland a service. In this part of the world there is probably little danger from spies, yet instances of espionage which might have serious consequences are not wanting. In Wellington it is matter oif common report, apparently on good foundation, that the operator of a secret wireless station recently discovered was fonnd to be intercepting despatches to the Government from British warships and other sources, and from the Government to the warships. His aerial apparatus was not a powerful one, but it served the purpose. His intention, evidently, was to •mail the intercepted messages to some place where, through the medium of other Germans, the commanders of the Kaiser's cruisers in the Pacific could obtain them and lay their plans accordingly. This at any rate was all within the bounds of possibility. Clearly sifch conduct_ in war-time* if proven, deserves nothing short of the death penalty. But British people have ever been too lenient with their enemies, says the Lyttelton Times.
