The Union Company’s steamer Maitai from San Francisco, was timed to leave at 3 p.m. to-day for Sydeny, in completion of her voyage. She, however, has been delayed, as the firemen have come off, acting perfectly within their' rights. They signed on in Now Zealand, and wished to be discharged here. Accordingly they gave the customary twenty-four hours’ notice and left on its expiry. The reason given by the firemen for leaving the ship ife that they would have, been paid off in Sydney in any case, and as they have their homes here they did not want to go further, losing work between the time of their paying off in Sydney and their arrival in New. Zealand, to which country they are entitled to have'their passage paid. The Maitai’s passengers and luggaf*e and the mails were transferred tonight to the Ulimaroa. It is hoped to get the Maitai away for Sydney to-morrow. 1 I A FIRESV7AN SHOT. V Wellington, October 16. The circumstances under which Martin Beharrie, a fireman on the Ulimaroa, was shot in the loft hip on Tuesday night, are being investigated by the police. Beharrie, with two companions, went on board the vesesel, and at or about the time of their reaclmig the deck Beharrie was wounded in the hip by a revolver shot. He says that lie knows of nobody who would willingly injure him, and both his companions absolutely deny having | been responsible. Beharrie was rc- ! moved to the hospital, and is doing well. A man was arrested this afternoon. and will be charged in the morning with unlawfully wounding Beharrie.
