CLAIM FOR PAPEETE. FRENCH GOVERNMENT’S LEVY OF £40,000. TPib Press Absoguttow.l Auckland, October 17. Maxwell, Young and Co. have received letters from Papeete which state that , the French Government had issued a notice that it will claim against German property at Tahiti and the adjacent islands under the French flag 1,000,000 francs, or £lO,000, to help the indemnity and losses caused by the shelling of Papeete. The Societo Comrnerciale de Loeeaino is the principal German house affected. Its headquarters are at Hamburg, and its interests in the Eastern Pacific is worth at normal times more than 1,000,000 francs.
