O SMALLPOX CASES. [Br Electric Telegraph —Copyrioht] [United Press Association.! Sydney, October 15. Smallpox is still lingering and the average is two cases, mostly from the metropolitan area, daily. Numbers of cases in country centres are all of a mild type. MAHENOS CREW PAID OFF. Sydney, October 15. The Maheno was unable to depart yesterday allegedly owing to the firemen and trimmers refusing duty, and her departure has been indefinitely postponed. Officers of the Seamen's Union state that the men were dissatisfied with the working of the vessel and gave 24 hours' notice. On behalf of the company it is stated that the men, in opposition to the recommendation of their own executive, demanded an entirely unwarranted increase in the manning of the Maheno, The Company refused all demands, paid off all hands, and laid up the vessel. ELECTION LIBEL CASE. Sydney, October 15. The Attorney-General has issued ; writ for £SOOO against "The Work man" newspaper for alleged defamn tion contained in comments regarding the Monaro election.
