INCIDENT AT ANTWERP. Times and Sydney Sun Services. f . ' London. October 14. An officer commanding a fort at Antwerp which the Germans were pounding to dust ordered the garrison to save themselves. Thoy did so, but the officer stuck to his post, and was taken prisoner. THE GERMAN VIEW. London, October 14. .The Berliner Tagebhut says . that the whole situation is favorable for the Germans. The paper characterises the .Russian victories at Suwalki and Augustovo as inventions. The locality oLAhe later engagements, however, proves that the Germans have been driven westward. "BILL BONIFACE" AND HIS PUB. London. October 14. A French officer states that the Kaiser owned a hotel in the heart of Paris, where he stored motor-cars, petrol, and a ton of ammunition. The Kaiser had hoped to watch from the balcony his troops passing down the Champs Elysees. GERMAN ENERCY. London, October 14. The Times' military correspondent writes:—"lnformation from various sources suggests that during the last , ten days the German armies in France have been heavily reinforced; and are determined to make heroic efforts again to strike at the enemies' ground east and west simultaneously. Youth and family men are together in the line. If the conduct of the Germans had not been so abominable, one could afford to admire the energy with which they are conducting the war. There is evidjßnce that one and a half million Germans are engaged in the west, and now that Antwerp has fallen the greater part of these will be available for offensive operations. The Allies still retain a marked numerical preponderance, and there is no reason to suppose that the serious conflict now developing in North r west France wi ttonllrußhkvfSgni isolcm France will not turn to our advantage." BRITISH SUSPECT TREACHERY. United Press Association. |, London, Ocobor 13. Lieut!' Dukiiifield, "who has returned from Antwerp, states tbut the naval contingent quitted the trenches at night. He considered that the entry of the 2000 into Holland was the result of guides' treachery. London, October 14.
A proclamation, signed by the Mayor and sheriffs and the German commander of Antwerp, has been" published on the Dutch frontier, asking the refugees to return to the city, and promising that private property will be respected. The Government is appealing to local bodies for further act'ommodation for Belgian refugees.
The Morning Post, commenting on Mr Churchill's/ visit to Antwerp, understands that his activities in fields which do not properly concern him cannot conduce to good working.
Five thousand of the contingent returned to England from Antwerp, and had an enthusiastic reception at Dover and Deal. , Mr Ban*, an officer of the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand, escaped from Antwerp with his wife and family after exciting experiences in the, bombardment. He states that the British contingent .reached Antwerp immediately after Mr Churchill's visit on Saturday.
The following is a copy of a telegram received by His Excellency the Governor from the Secretary' of Stat* for the Colonies: October .13.—The Commonwealth of Australia has offered another brigade of light horse and a brigade train and field ambulances complete. This offer has been most gratefully accepted by the Army gratefully accepted by the Army Council Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Connaught has sent £57,000, subscribed by the women of Canada, for hospital purposes. Of this sunr£2o,000 will he utilised in the purchase of motor-ambulance cars. Each car will be inscribed 'Canadian Women's Motor Ambulance.' The balance .will be used to build, equip, and maintain a naval hospital, with 100 beds, to be named 'The Canadian Women's Hospital. Her Majesty the Queen has graciously consented to bo patroness.
