PERSONAL.

Lieutenant-Colonel Sir William Kay, Maori war veteran, is dead, reporcs the Times-Sydney Sun service. Mr James Thorn, Social Democratic candidate for the Palmcrston seat, opened his candidature at Palmerston North last night.—Press Association. V. Mr J. B. Richards, attorney for Dr. A. Dillon Carbery, notifies that the doctor being engaged in active military service in Europe at this time, ins practice in Stratford will be closed from the 20th October until Dr. Carbery returns to New Zealand. It is understood that Dr. Johnson, who has been acting as locum tenens for him, is unable to remain longer in charge of the practice, having made other engagements. Dr. Carbery's very many friends will wish him every success and distinction in his country's service in the great war now proceeding. \ Friends will learn with regret that Mrs Hanby, mother of the Rev. 0. Hanby and of Mrs E. C. Robinson, of this town, died at Nelson yesterday. The late Mrs Hanby resided for a while in Stratford after the death of her husband some two years ago, and eventually returned to again reside in Nelson with her unmarried daughter, Miss Hanby. The deceased lady had been in indifferent health for. some time, and in response to an urgent call Mrs Robinson left Taranaki for Nelson last Monday, arriving just before Mrs Hanby's decease. Much sympathy will be felt with the family in their bereavement.

The recent cable announcing the escape of a Union Co. officer from Antwerp probably refers to Mr A. Barr, a well known officer on the Union steamers, states a Press Association message from Westport. Mrs Barr was visiting her parents at Antwerp prior to the declaration of war. Mr Barr left later for London, but was only allowed to proceed to Antwerp conditionally on signing on to assist in the defence of the city if necessary. He did so in order to reach his wife and family, and now apparently has got back in London.
