STRATFORD BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held last night, when there wore present: The Mayor (Air W. P. Kirkwood), and Crs. 11. AlcK. Alorison, J. B. Richards, J. Fredric, J. W. Boon, Reader, J. H. Thompson and N. J, King. REPORTS. The Works Committee reported;— Your Committee bog to report having made an, inspection of the Borough, and have the following recommendations to make: —That a notice be served on the owner of section 408 to have the hedge cut low enough to prevent it shading Miranda Street. That the pound he erected on the south ride of the septic tank paddock. Overseer to prepare plans and estimates of cost, plans and estimates to include stables for Borough horses. That the trees on the southern boundary of the septic tank jeddock be topped. That the eastprn side of Corded a Street, between Regan and Antonio Streets be formed in "addition to making a footpath. The extra cost will be between £2 and £3. That the present protection round the trees in Broadway North be removed and replaced with two uprights surrounded with wire netting. That notice be served on owner of sections 175 and 215 (belt ween Juliet and Orlando streets) to have the watercourse flowing through his property kept open. Other works that your Committee consider require attention are as follows; The shifting of the corporation shed in Fenton Street, and Crs. Masters and ■Richards have been appointed a subcommittee to report on the question of a oorporation yard.' Juliet Street between Celia and Romeo Streets: Tho Overseer has been instructed to •rive an estimate of cost of forming Oils part of Juliet Street, and alsoan estimate of the cost of gravelling 0 «r chain. Culvert, Juliet Street XoHh op Seyton Street: The Overseer has been instructed to give an estimate of cost- of replacing culvert with a tunnel, and also an estimate of cost of filling in the hollow. Crossing. Portia Street on South side of Regan Street; Tho Overseer has been instructed to give an estimate of the cost of inserting culvert the full width of street, and to report on best means of diverting water from south side of Regan Street.' Works referred to the Committee for consideration: Bridge, Cordelia Street; Your Committee after making an inspection Pave decidod to obtain an estimate of the cost of a foot bridge at Ariel Street before deciding to make any recommendation to the Council. Chimney Sweep: The Town Clerk in obtaining information regarding the cost of an outfit.
A motion by Or. Boon to . delete the danse regarding tree-guards in B-midway North was lost. The Fire Brigade Committee reported: Your Committee beg to recommend that the Conned grant the Brigade two uniforms at a cost of £6.
'PVin Overseer reported:—l have the honor to submit the following report frvf your consideration: Short, lengths of footpaths have been constructed on Olo+on Bond and Cordelia Street. Tim of Sevton Street between Broad., wsy and Miranda, Street have been eroded, grass seeds will he sown in „ f davs. Footpaths in Broadway Central are being ronaired where cut im hv TelegranK Department. Footmfb<, in Bogan Street between Broadway and Miranda Street have had a 'light coat of pit gravel. Three ordinary crossings have been nut in: T, E Curtis, Miranda Street: Bonded, Portia. Street; W. P. Kirkwood, Miranda Street. 800 cubic, ya-ds "I metal have been crushed. The work of carting out stone from the river is progressing favorably, and weather permitting, this work should bo finished next week. Work to he undertaken during the month: Kerhing end channelling Fenton Street and Broadway Central*; footpath formation in Cordelia Street; filling in hollow in Juliet Street.
The abattoir manager reported:— 1 have the honor to submit my report on the working of the Abattoir during the month of September, 1914. The following stock were slaughtered: Cows 53, heifers 39, oxen 15, sheep 292, lambs nil, pigs 13, tripos prepared 55, cows’ hods 18; slaughtering fees £54 1 Os. Stock condemned: Cows 2 wholly; 3 partially; heifers, 3 partially; pigs, 3 wholly. No. 4 paddock is being ploughed, and will be ready for the grass seed shortly. The Borough Inspector reported that during September four bead of cattle were impounded, and six persons were convicted of breaches of by-laws. Fourteen street lights were put ir ELECTRIC LIGHT. The manager of the Stratford Electrical Supply Co. (Mr W. J. Newton) wrote as follows under date September 24th: —“Replying to yours of July 4th last, I am instructed to point out that we have askod your Council to meet our directors in full Council to discuss the matter of your adviser inspecting our plant. Should your Council seo fit to accede to our request wo shall be pleased to discuss this matter with them. Wo would, however, point out that when your adviser was in Stratford he was given every facility for inspecting the company’s plant.” o H. W. Climio and Son notified that their report on electric lighting would not be available for a time, owing to a dogreo of disorganisation following oh two members of the
staff leafing with, the Expeditionary Force. The Town Clerk notified that Messrs Climie’s report had not yet been received. When it is received, Mr Newton’s letter will he considered by the Electric Light Committee. FENCING A STREET. W. Brooking applied for permission to fence off a portion of Cordelia Street adjoining the river on the south side. Or. King moved, and Cr Thompson seconded, that the request be granted, but the motion was lost. Cr. King then moved, and Cr. Fredvio seconded, that Mr Kerr be given notice to vacate the piece of street which he has fenced. Cr. King thought Mr Brooking was only asking for what had been granted to Mr Kerr. 1 Cr. Boon said he had voted against the first motion because there was jno provision excluding the use of (barbed wire. By consent, the first motion was put again and. carried, with the addition that the fence should be done to the satisfaction of the overseer. GENERAL.
The tender of Messrs Bellringer Bros, was accepted for the painting of the south fire station.
j W. P. Brown wrote regarding saniitary arrangements at his shop in Re[gan Street.—Received. | Mr E, Jackson appiied for a crossing to his residence in Portia Street. Ho also applied for better lighting in the street and offered to pay £1 per annum towards qosu of same.—Referred to the Works and Light Committees. .
The statement of receipts and expenditure for the month ending September ’loth .■-•bowed as follows:—Dr. : balance August 31st £3634'6s lid, expenditure for month £572 15s sd, tonal £4207 2s 4d; receipts for month, £429 16s lid; debit balance September uOth £3777 5s Bd. Cr. Fredric moved in accordance with motion that all employees who have been with the Council for two years or more be given one week’s holiday annually on full pay, any further holiday required not to he paid for—On Cr King’s suggestion (the motion was withdrawn, and the matter was referred to the Works Committee.
The crusher now being idle, the Mayor suggested that it should be hired not. The-'opinion was expressed that it should not' be hired out without a competent man going with it to safeguard the Council’s interest. —lt was decided to refer the matter to the Works Committee for consideration.
Messrs S. Spence. Smith anl Dwyer wrote that they were prepared to pay half the cost of work requested to be don© in Cordelia Street from Antonio • 1 Street.-— The Overseer said the cost of the work would be £l6. Deferred to the Works Committee for report. The secretaries of the Huntly Disaster Relief Fund, wrote bringing the fund under the Council’s notice. —To bo informed that a fund had been opened at the ‘‘Post” office.-—The Town Clerk reported that a balance of £7 from the fund raised in connection with tho Trocadero fire woull be handed to the Huntly fund. Mr G. N. Curtis, chairman of the (Domain Board, wrote stating that I the Council’s employees were taking j stone from river banks under the control of the Board, and asking that jsuch he discontinued.-—lt was decided 'to instruct the Overseer to make sure 'in future that the Council’s men do |not take stone from the Board’s property. ; Seven residents of Ariel Street for- ( warded tho following petition: “We (beg to draw your attention to the (state of Ariel Street. The carriers (refuse to serve us without extra charge, the milk vendors refuse to (serve us as the street is inaccessible Ito vehicles, and our wives are unable ito use their perambulators. Having placed these facts before you, w© hope the Council will seo its way to remedy these grievances as early as I possible.”—Referred to the Works Committee for report.
