The following telegram was received 'by the Chief Postmaster, Wellington, this evening from the postmaster at Karamea“The Mangapapa went ashore on the North Spit and had to he huriredly abandoned at high water. At 2 p.m. the engine room was flooded. The crew is safe. The vessel is likely to become a total wreck.” Karamea is on the west coast of the South Island, in the. Nelson district. It is prettily situated on the Karamen River and has a bar harbor. The small steamers which regularly trade to the port frequently have trouble iu crossing the bar. PARTICULARS OF THE STRANDING. Westport, October 1 13. The Mangapapa left Karamea wharf on Thursday timber-laden for Westport. She stranded on the South Spit, but got safely back to the wharf. She left again on Saturday and again was stranded, this time or the North Spit. She was in a eafe place till Sunday, when a flood came down carrying away her lines, and the steamer was driven into lb« breakers. Yesterday the hold and the engine room were flooded, and the crew were compelled to leave the ship. The abandoned everything for the time being. It is feared the steamer may become a total wreck. HEAVY SEA, NOT FLOOD, CAUSED THE MISHAP. SALVAGE PROSPECTS BAD. Westport, October 18. It was the heavy sea, not a flood, which carried away the Mangapapa’* lines. The crew got the mails and their personal effects ashore at low water. The prospects of paring steamer are bad.
