COLF. LADIES' CHAMPIONSHIP. [Phb Pbem Ajsjsooiation ] Dunedin, October 8. The New Zealand ladies' golf championship commenced on the Balmaeewen links to-day in splendid weather. A breeze was blowing sufficiently strong to affect play, but not seriously. The greens were tricky. The first round of the championship resulted:— Miss I). Fisher (Christchurcb) beat Miss Chrystall (Christchurcb), 3 up Mid 2; Miss Wright (Timaru) beat Miss Wilson (Christchurcb), 5 and 4;. Mrs E. G. Ken- (Timaru) won from Mrs Allan (Otago) by default. A Coronation Medal Handicap was also played, the players breaking 90 being Miss R. Harris (Hagley), gross ')!, handicap 11, nett 80; Miss Glendinning (Otago), 102—22—80; Miss Roberts (Otago), 109—24—85; Miss T. Rattray (Otago), 110—23—87: Miss N. Gorrie (Auckland), 103—10—87; Miss It. Wilson (Christchurcb), 93 s—BB. CRICKET. At New Plymouth last night a club ■vas formed and named the Phoenix Club, and it was decided to enter for the Thursday competition. The follow- •!}.-; officers were elected:—President, Mr New'tori King; vice-presidents, Messrs A. S. Hussoll and F. H. Pob9rtson ; secretary smd treasurer, Mr .Gwillim; captain, Mr E. Whittle; delegates to the Association, Messrs Whittle and Owillim ; delegate to the Cricket Council Mr GwiUim; committee. Messrs Cozens. Vale, Gwillim, Connelly and Braund; auditor, Mr Yale.
