MAKAHU NOTES.
[from our own correspondent.] Last Friday evening tho residents of Makahu and tho surrounding districts turned out in large numbers to attend- the patriotic concert and dance in aid of the Belgian Relief Fund. The schoolroom was packed to tho doors, and several were unable to gain admission to the concert, and had to be content with listening from outside. The musical programme arranged by Mrs Brewer was contributed to by the following Mesdames • Brewer, Mounsey and Martin, the Misses Mouniey and Messrs Speight (3), Noble,' Foley and Hide. The latter part' of the 1 programme took the form of a minstrel troupe, and the opportunity was taken for introducing to the audience Sim Martin’s Ragtime Baud. The instruments produced reflected great credit on tho makers, and all present thoroughly enjoyed the selections rendered. The members of the troupe and band were ably conducted by Mr Martin, who deserves great praise for his untiring efforts to 'make his band proficient. It was eleven o’clock when the school was cleared for dancing, and this was kept going till nearly 5 a.m. on Saturday. The takings at the concert and dance amounted to nearly £7, which is exceedingly good for so small a district- The best thanks of all the residents in the district arc due to Mrs Brewer for the way in which she worked for the success of the function. Mr 'Allan Walker made an efficient M.C. for the dance.
