MADE A SCENIC RESERVE.

The Chamber of'Commerce has been active for a long time towards having secured for scenjc purposes the :afea of bush land on the' eastern side !o| Whangamompiia' saddle, arid were made tb this end. th§ Stratford " Mountain Club ; w.as formed the Lyttelton Times reprinted a portion of the “Post” report of the proceedings, and as a result Air ’lf. G! Ell, M.P.’, wrote to the President on the matter, Mr Ell has taken much interest in the flora and fauna of New Zealand, and is honorary organising secretary of the New Zealand Forest and Bird Protection Society. In reply to Mr Ell’s letter pie President sought assistance in having the bush oh Whangamomona Saddle made secure. Under date of 29th September the following letter was received by Mr Ell from the Prime Mi ll ' ister:—“Referring again to your fefter of August 17th last, in regard to the fepresentatippp xpqcje by Mt. J. BjRichards, of Stratford, with reference 6o an area of land adjacent to V/hangamomona, I have to state that apparently the area referred tq is section 19, block 1., Mahoe S-U*. A proposal to set apart this land for scenic purposes was cpnsidered by the Scenery Preservation Board at a meeting held on the 11th ultimo, when it was resolved that the section should he spt apart for scenic purposes. Action to give effect to the Board’s recommendation is now being taken.” Thus the object has been attained, and those who have driven over the Whanga Saddle w,ill best realise what good service to future generations have thus been rendered by the enthusiasm and forethought of Mr E|l arid the Stratford Chamber of Commerce.
