The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1914. THE TOURIST TRAFFIC.

Due of the less important side-issues of tlie war in Europe ishlie diversion oi overseas tourist iramc from tlie Continent, anu especially from tlie United States of America. With the exception of the United Kingdom, Europe is now practically a closed territory foi the ordinary traveller who is not looking for battlelieids and the dangers attendant thereto, and this year therefore the swarms of people who ordinal'ily go across the Atlantic from America every season will be seeing their own country next year. California expects the biggest tourist travel on record during tne-coming winter season, from December to April, and by that time the Exposition will be attracting the scores of thousands of people who would usually he thinking of going to Europe. Germany and France and Switzerland and Italy and all of tne countries of the Continent may no. realise it, but they have killed one goose that laid the Golden Egg.' Americans have been spending of late about £70,000,000 annually in ‘'doing’ Europe—and in many instances being “done” themselves, as one writer put.-, it, but it is opined that Europe will not be popular with outside visitors for some years to come. Possibly many Americans, who have already seen a good deal of their own country will give the lands of the South Pacific some thought, and the Commonwealth of Australia and tlie Dominion of New Zealand may prove quite havens for the great overflow of American tourists, while Australians who want tc 1 wander will probably consider the attractions offered to the visitor by America.
