ANTWERP BOMBARDED. DEFENDERS COMPELLED TO RETIRE BY THE ATTACK. United Press 'Association. Amsterdam, October 3. Following the attack against Wavro and St. Catherine forts, the Gormans asked for an armistice to bury their dead. Antwerp, October 4, Official.—-A violent attack by the German artillery compelled the defenders of Antwerp eastward of the Senne to retire to a strong position on the River Nethe. GERMANS LOSE SEVERELY IN TWO ATTACKS. HISTORIC BUILDINGS FLAGGED. (Received 8.45 a.m.) Antwerp, October 4. “Het Handelsblad,” a daily paper, learns that two German attacks at Antwerp were repulsed, the German losses being severe. The Germans have not yet attempted to cross the Nethe. Flags hoisted on the town hall and church towers indicate that buildings are historic and contain works of art.
