TERMONDE AS THE OBJECT OF THE GERMANS’ ATTACK.
London, September 30.
The Germans are recommencing their endeavor to encircle Termonde. They sent a thousand Uhlans into the town, and, with a mitrailleuse cleverly posted, they mowed down many. After the Germans had some success at Alost, the Belgians cut them off, capturing 120 and drove the Germans from the town, where they had been firmly established for several weeks. After retiring three miles, the Germans bombarded the abandoned toAvn,. doing great damage. The Germans also attacked the fort at Wall sen, using 17 heavy guns from Liege, requiring special concrete beds.
Two thousand German dead were found at Svene after Saturday’s fight-
The Belgians estimate that 10,000 Germans were killed during the five days’ fighting, mostly members of the Landwehr, many being over 50 years of ago.
Though Termonde has been four times bombarded, and twice deliberatly set ablaze, the Burgomaster and his two daughters, aged 16 and 17, remained in the town as voluntary nurses. Food is so scarce in Brussels that the German administration is finding difficulty in supplying the 180,000 civilians who have applied for rations.
