» The, death of Mr Harry Piper, whicn occurred in the Christchvtrch Hospital last Friday evening, removes from the New Zealand turf one of its Vestknown figures. Oii his arrival in the Dominion, in the early days of Canterbury, He obtained a position with Messrs Manning] and .Co.'i brewers., ol Christen ;irch, and after having been about six years in their service, he took over the Wharf Hotel on the Ferry Road. While there, says the Evening News, lie raced two horses named Beer Tax and Levant, both sue cessful hurdlers, which he'rode himself in some of their winning essays. The deceased also devoted'some of his time to the racing and traihing'bf trotting horses, afterwards handicapping' and starting for some of the local'clubs.
