The Wellington section of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force and the national units which have assembled here from all parts of New Zealand are being officially farewelled at Newtown Park this afternoon. The wnole of the schools closed, and most of the business places are observing- a hrdfholiday, with the result that the attendance of the public is. very large. Cable Board, confirms the report that the Farming Island staff is safe, but regretted that he was unable to reveal further details of the news which had tome through from the station. owing to Government rest.'ktions. There is reason for believing that the station has not been totaffv destroyed. It is reported that although some damage was done to the buildings on the Island, they are more or less intact, while the fact that the staff is still on the Island suggests that an effort will be made to repair tbo damage as quickly as possible.
