THE CONFIDENT GERMAN SELiF-DEFENCE AGAINST THE WICKED ENTENTE. London, September 22. An Englishman who has returned i'om Germany says that Berlin persists in the statement that Germany iu at war purely in self-defence against the "wicked and ambitious entente," who are anxious to crush their strongest rival. Educated Germans confidently expect a land victory, but are prepared for-naval defeat. They assert the impossibility of famine occurring in Germany, owing to the crops being extraordinarily good. Germany claims that the war bonds for 50 millions have been over-subscribed, and the subscriptions to an unlimited loan have reached 63 millions.
THE GERMAN 17-INCH GUN. London. September 21. The German 17-inch siege guns dis charge a projectile weighing 21,000 (Pi pounds, describe a parabola covering 12 miles, rising in height 1200yds, discharge electrically from a considerable distance, the operator not daring to 'remain in the vicinity, the shells ex ploding with deadly gases.
