STRENGTHENING FORTIFICATIONS AND DEFENCES.

It is reported that Cologne, Dusseldorf, Wesel and Duisburg arc streng thening their fortifications and pre paring defences. (Cologne, on the Rhine, one of tin. chief fortresses in the German Em pire ] Wesel, a fortress at the confluence of Duisberg are noted educational centres, also in the Rhineland, unfortified ; they lie eastward of the Belgian frontier.)

A Saxony officer admits that the German artillery near Malines annihiliated a Prussian regiment, mistaking it for the French infantry; als*. that near a frontier village two battalions of the 28th German infantrj mistook one another for French, and shot down every man.
GERMAN OFFICERS SHOT BY THEIR OWN MEN.
(Received 8.50 a.m.) v' London, September 18. Thirty-two German officers who were shot in the hack by their own men recently were brought to Brussels.
THE COST TO GERMANY. EXPENDITURE RUNS INTO MILLIONS STERLING. (Received 10 a.m.) Copenhagen, September 18. The “Berliner Tageblatt” says the cost of the German military adminis tration is throe million sterling daily while Germany’s total expenditure on the war to date is 132 millions sterling.

London, September 17. The captain of a Spanish steamer which has arrived at London says he had great difficulty iu inducing tho crew to work the ship. He says the crew believed the German news circulated in Spain, stating that the Germans bad captured London, and that half of the city w r as in flames.
GERMAN CRUISER SINKS HARISON LINER DIPLOMAT.
IPeh Prt?hr Association.] Auckland, September 18. News lias been received in Auckland that the Harison liner Diplomat, ol 7GOO tons, with £250,000 worth ot cargo, was sunk in the Bay of Bengal by the German cruiser Emden.
