Thomson, E Ohriktoifel, 15. Andersdiv•arid T. ; -Smith. ' ! ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer \Mlr W. d. Lopdell)i reported:—During the irionth ' -good', progress lifts beeri made in the respec- , tive Ridings. ' The fine spdll *rif nvea-f; trier lias dried up many of the uninetalled roads, which are now in fair order. As requested at last meeting i have inspected many small ' bridges, culverts a’fid ditclies, 1 and; will report on same as they require.: it. Mr J. Plew: Re application to have a few yards of earth removed, to give an approach to his house, it is a reasonable request. The earth can 'be deposited ad the corner of Denmark Road by the dairy fa'ctory office to fill up the existing hollow. A’huroa Road West: There is 'a’bririt; 100 yards of -this hill in the cutting in a' Very ' bad condition, being corduroyed with wood, which should be removed. The 1 cutting should be widened by about four feet and metalled with pit metal, which is adjacent to the road. The proposed work would cost about £25. Heao and Autawa tracks have been greatly improved during the month., Authority has been received from the Public "Works Department 'for the expenditure of £IOO and £SO for these two tracks. The necessary Work is now fin hand. Toko: The hut at Toko has been repaired, ; am)' a dray-shed has been erected. The land 'has been ploughed arid laid down in oats and grass. 1 would recommend that an eighth of an acre of carrots bo pla'iftocl in each Tiding for winter- feed lor our horses. Raitieke Road bridge: The timber has: men sent to this bridge and the work' will be put in hand as soon as con-' venient to the parties concerned. Mtfngachu Riding: 1 think'the time, has arrived when this Riding should. have a horse and dray of fits own. ■ There is £4O on the estimates for hire of horse and dray. Tin's amount; would buy a plant suitable 'for the district. There will be a lob of carting required this year, as it •is ■ our intention to rise up all the metal in this Riding before getting “ out more. Besides there is a lot of pipe carting to be done. He. striae Crasher: The order has been given for u portable Acme stone crusher, with 20-ioot elevators detached, at n cost slightly in advance "of the price quoted at last meeting. Rc purchase of indented steel bars: -Mr Clair, of Waitara, has offered tvs 'Si tons of indented steel bars at a 'very reasonable price. With the 'amount of bridge work on hand this -Veai it would be good property. I.'have, purchased several tons 'of 'iron rails at a Very satisfactory price for bridge work. Contracts: It is mow time wo called tenders for many of our contracts. Kelly Street, Midhirkt: A neW consent is being obtained to raise a loan to metal this street'. Re broken thrift: While using the County dray at Toko after hold's the hack"bahfi ‘broke ‘Causing the .shaft to Irre'ak. The surfaceman asks thfit' 'the Council pay the cri'St of renewal, hfti this may have happened during Working hours, New harness for horse in North Riding: The collar 1 is 'too small for the horse and the saddle is unsuit able, causing the horse to 'have t bad back. If the Council decides to purchase a horse and dray for the Mangaehu Riding, this harness would suit a smaller horse.' Opitnako Road No. 3: A small bridge on this road referred to by Foreman Robinson is in a bad way, and requires 'rebuilding in 'concrete, the cost rif which would not exceed £4O. / Re duty on stone Crushers: I would 'recommend that the Council' pass a resolution asking the Government to remove the duty from •English-made stone-crushing machines. I understand that the duty is very heiivy. and if removed it would make a considerable reduction in the cost of our machine, now under order. Thu Government saw fit to remove the duty from road rollers and the crushing machines are just as essential to' ’good road making.
