Word lias been received in Wellington that Dr. Schulta, the former Governor of Samoa, was handed over as a prisoner of <var to the Governor of Fiji on September 3. Other prisoners placed in custody were—-The Governor's secretary and wireless expert (Comander Hirzch) and Hanson, representative .of a big German engineering hnn at Hong Kong. They' were sent to Fiji in charge of Lieut-' enant Kenny, of Wellington, who returned to Samoa. ,
The New Zealand Herald says that no further information has been received regarding the interruption of the Pacific cable at Fanning Island. There is now little doubt that the sec lion to Bamfield Creek (Vancouver Island), was also cut, so that the station is complete!}- isolated. Had this cable remained intact, some further account of "the three-funnelled c'rm;er Hying the French flag" would probibly have reached New Zealand by way of Canada and Loudon. DIRECTIONS AS TO POSTAL MATTER. Wellington, September 14. Owing to the confusion which appears to exist in the public mind, the postal authorities wish once'again to state that all correspondence for members of the mail body of the Now Zealand Expeditionary l'orce must be addressed to the particular camp at which the men are being trained until the force embarks. The notification as to addressing correspondence to the G.P.0., Wellington, is only intended to apply to correspondence posted after the force has left New Zealand. Country natives offer the Government a block of sixteen hundred acres of rich land at Ruatoki to be sold by the Government at the highest market price and the proceeds devoted to tho Defence Fund.
THE REGIMENTAL FUND. Palmerston North, September 11.. The sum of £I3OO has been received by the Wellington Regiments of infantry and mounted nun in camp at Awapuni. It i'■ from a sum collected in Wairarapa towards the regimental fund. The balance of £1750 which is being raised will be forwarded shortly for a fund to be administered by a lioard consisting of tho commanding officer of the regiments, the second's
in command, quartermaster and company commanders, and will be used to provide necessaries for tlie men at front, special medical attention, and financial assistance to men invalided or separated from their regiment. The total of £7OOO is needed, and this has been allocated to the following four districts to raise, Gisborue and Hawka's Bay, Taranaki, and Wanganui, West Coast, and Wairarapa and Bush districts.
