WHOSE FIRE?
BRIGADES SQUABBLE WHILE "FARM IS BURNING DOWN. The story of a comedy of two fire brigades comes from Bothenburg, the famous model mediaeval city on the Tauber. Some nights ago during a thunderstorm fire broke out in the farmyard attached to the ruins of the Burg oi Saldeneck, on the frontier of Bavaria and Wurtemberg. The fire brigade of the Bavarian village of Betwar dashed off to the fire and began to put it out. Ten minutes later up dashed the brigade from an adjacent Wurtemberg village with tbe village bailie on board. The official accosted the Bavarians furiously: "How dare you touch oui fireP"
The Bavarian bailie retorted angrily • "It is not your fire. We found it and got here first."
"Your leave our fire alone," demanded the Wurtemberger.
Angry words were bandied to and fro, and threatened to be followed by i blows, when some of the Bavarian firemen who in the meantime had been attending to business came up to the disputants and observed that thoy might as well bury the hatchet, becauso the fire had burnt itself out.
An adjournment for refreshments to the nearest inn ended the battle of Saldeneck.
