THE WALKURE'S CREW
Wellington, September 12
The Moana, which arrived from San Francisco last night, brought ten Britishers who formed part of the crew of the German steamer Walkure, captured at Makatea Island in the Pacific by the French gunboat Zele. The Walkure, after undergoing extensive engine.room repairs at Wellintgon, left for Makatea to load guano, and when the gunboat arrived there the Walkure had no steam up and offered no resistance. An armed guard was placed on board and she steamed to Papeete, where she now is, escorted by the Zele. As she steams four knots an hour more than the Zele she had to slow down every now and then to allow the gunboat to keep up with her. The Walkure's officers and the Germans of the crew are now imprisoned at Papeete. The Britishers who came by the Moana are penniless, their wages being unpaid. They were shipped at Wellington.
