The Petrograd correspondent of th» Daily Chronicle says the greet battle at Lublin ended in a complete victory for the Russians, who tliorougjkly routed the Austrians.

Refugees state that a reign of t«ror exists in the Serb provinces m Austria. There is a gibbet in ev«rj village, and every day are hung thereon fresh corpses. Hardly a Serb leader has escaped arrest. Sopilo, Nationalist leader in the Diet, is believed t« havfe been executed. The most prominent citizens are held as hostages. The people in many of the poor district are dying of starvation. A wounded offcer describes the desperate fight at Orlau. The trenehes there had been thrice taken and retaken when the Russian reinforcements arrived, and the Germans retreated to Osterode, losing six mitrailleuse* and eight field guns. The Russian* harassed them with bayonet charge*. .The whole route for four kilometres '(2s miles) was strewn with German corpses.

A inHssage received in Rome states that the advance guard of the Russian centre is marching towards Berlin, having invaded Silesia. The capture of Breslau is threatened. The Petrograd correspondent of fcfe« Daily Chronicle says that there are ae»r 12 or 13 German army corps in East Prussia. Russia will soon benefit from the approaching winter, as the swamps become frozen and marchable. At present the roads southward of Inters* burg have been converted into a morass by the passage of Germans. H« states that the new Krupp Howitzers, which killed Genei-al Samsonoff, are manned and fired by Krupp's experts. The Germans are feverishly strengthening Thorn, Kuln, and Grandeuz. They have re-arranged the whole country, destroying hundreds of vilt lages. farm-houses, and bridges. ■
The Russians are now face to face with a march across country bar* of life.
