FROM EAST AND "THE BEYOND"

Whangamomona.—The alterations and enlargements to the Whangamomona Hall (which has lately been purchased by the 1.0.0. F., A.C., Pouatu Lodge) have been completed, and it is now considered to be the most up-to-date in this part of the "beyond." Two cloak rooms and a large supper room 20 feet by 30 feet have been added, and an acetylene gas plant has been installed, which, of course, puts the old kerosene lamps quite in the shade.

Tahora.—On Saturday night last the euchre party at the Tahora Tunnel Hall was well attended, players of the fairer sex being well in evidence, several having come a considerable distance in order to try and secure s. prize, there being four put up for competition. The ladies' winning prize was carried off by Mrs Hickermoth, while Mr F. Gates secured the gentlemen's trophy. Amid much laughter and amusement—generally attendant on such occasions—the booby prizes were presented and accepted in good part by Miss Geary and Mr J. Kenna respectively. At the conclusion of the euchre tournament, dancing was engaged in until midnight, a very good programme and supper being provided., Kohuratahi.—The War Fund organised by the settlers of Kohuratahi has reached the respectable sum of £65 10s, which, considering the size and scattered nature of the district, is something to be rather proud about.— The ball which was held at Kohuratahi for the purpose of reducing the debt on the hall was a great success, and realised nearly £lO. Many of the dancers came from distances ranging up to fifteen miles.
