Broadside from the Lion.
AN INCIDENT IN THE FIGHTING AT HELIGOLAND.
SETTLING A GERMAN GRUISER IN 45 MINUTES.
(Received 11.45 a.m.)
London, September 0
A letter from a naval man aboard the Lion says: "It was a fine sight to see the Lion demolish n (German cruiser off Heligoland. Some of the In iter's shots came near the Lion. Then the latter, who was leading the line, signalled to open tire. She turned slowly and majestically, and tired, a broadside. Up went a cloud of smoke and steam from the German's aft* funnel, which was at a rakish angle. A huge rent appeared the length of her side as she was sinking. She half hauled down her-ensign. As we steamed to the rescue, she hauled up the flag and opened fire. The Lion turned and gave five shots from her turrets, and the cruiser disappeared amidst a shower of splinters, smoke, and fire. The incident occupied forty-five minutes.
