THE BATTLE OF TERMONDE
BELGIAN ARTILLERY FIRE VERY EFFECTIVE. BRUSSELS BESIEGED. Antwerp, Sepetraber 7. Germans were repulsed from Termonde. Many German wounded arrived at Antwerp, including Lieut. Latter, who declared that only three of his company survived the heavy fire and artillery fire to which they were opposed. Another officer stated that the fire of the forts destroyed an entire battalion. The Germans fired from behind barricades of their dead, of which at least 450 were abandoned on the field. It is officially stated that a thousKd Germans were killed in a battle to the southward of Termonde. The Germans retreated in disorder, and their attempted movement was completely checked, owing to the splendid action of the Belgian artillery. The Germans have pises'* siege guns abound Brussels. The official details of General Buclovr’s death are given. A lad named Hailed, aged IS, seeing, SOOyds distant, an officer studying a map, crawled among his comrades’ corpses to within 400yds. He took aim carefully and fired, and the officer fell dead. The lad, ‘rushing to discover the officer’s identity, removed Buclaw’s hoots, donned his uniform, and traversed the German lines. When approaching the Belgians, he discard, cd the helmet for his own cap, fearthat he would ho shot as a German. Notes to the value of 135,000 francs were found in Buclow’s vest pocket. The King handed the amount to the Red Cross. A secret pocket in the jacket contained memoranda and interesting details of the battlefield and the enemy’s intentions. The King knighted the lad, and presented'him with Buclow’s horse and pocket-book. AMBUSHED BY GERMANS, Ostend, September The Belgians in flooding the Terrnondo district drowned many Gormans, and their guns were lost. There wa« fierce fighting at Thisselt, westward of Malines. The Germans lost 3000, besides the prisoners sent to Antwerp. Prince Ligne, Count Villormont, and two others were reconnoitring in an armed motor and were ambushed hy Germans. Prince Ligne w r as seriously wounded hy four bullets, and the rest were killed.
