Balaclava Over Again
LANCER HEROES IN THE ALLIES' RETREAT.
(Received 8.30 a.m.')
Loudon, September 3
The outstanding incident of the Allies' retreat was the charge of the Ninth Lancers. Eleven tierman siege" guns were posted inside a wood, and at first "their, fire caused-ter-rible loss to our men, who had not suspected the presence of these guns as they were quite hidden by great' quantities of forage to give the appearance of small haystacks.
After several hours it was found impossible to silence them, so the Lancers rode straight at the guns debouching into an open, and charging under a hail of melinite and ly<fdite from other German gunners.
Nothing could stop the men and horses, and the Lancers cut down the gunners and put their guns out of action. Then, like the heroes of Balaclava, they rode Back, losing men even more quickly.
It is estimated the Regiment was reduced to four hundred men, but some are still rejoicing at the ride.
Captain F. 0. Grenfell, of the Ninth Lancers, on another occasion, though wounded in both legs and having lost two fingers, yet directly after he saw two guns nearly deprived of their servers owing to the hail of shrapnel. The horses were under cover near by, and Captain,Grenfell said: "We will get the guns back." Regardless of wounds he headed a number of his men harnessed the horses to the guns and saved them. He was then taken to the hospital.
